If the list of the most popular TV shows is compiled, the list would contain hundreds of names. There are many shows that were aired in the past, when televisions had just made their appearances in an average person’s home, which can be named here. At the same time, the shows being aired in the 1960′s to 1970′s like I Dream of Jeannie, I love Lucy etc still have dedicated fan followings even today.
This list of the most popular shows will try to mention as many shows as possible which were cult hits during their airing period. Some of the shows being mentioned here may still be airing even today, while some may have ended. The only thing common among these names is the fact that they were immensely popular while they were being aired.
In the comedy genre, the first name that comes to mind is of course Friends. It became popular not only in America but also in the other countries where it was aired. Similar comments can be the cartoon series “The Simpsons “, which pokes fun at the mindset of American people and politicians. Seinfeld, which basically deals with mundane everyday situations, definitely deserves to be here. Others include Everybody Loves Raymond, 30 Rock, Will and Grace etc.
The reality genre was defined by American Idol and Who Wants to be a Multimillionaire. Inspired from these, many similar series were created in various countries. The Survivor series, where a group of people had to survive in a remote tropical location too was replicated in many countries.
The X-Files was a viral hit as well and it became one of the first TV series to launch its episodes on DVD. Its simple theme music defined the mystery genre in the 1990′s. The CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) series too was an instant hit at the time of its launch.
As far as sitcoms are concerned, apart from the ones mentioned above names like, Frasier, Scrubs, How I met your Mother, Prison Break, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The King of Queens etc instantly come to mind. Some other shows include: The Honeymooners, All in the Family, 24, Dallas, Dynasty, Taxi, Cheers, Bonanza, Sex and the city, Ally McBeal, Baywatch, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Law and Order, House, ER, Dancing with the stars, Lost, Deal or no Deal etc.
This list could go on and on. I have had to restrict myself to current ones as if I had written about them all, the length of this article would have been intolerable. These may be considered as the most popular shows on television ever as their names instantly come to mind.
