If the list of the most popular TV shows is compiled, the list would contain hundreds of names. There are many shows that were aired in the past, when televisions had just made their appearances in an average person’s home, which can be named here. At the same time, the shows being aired in the 1960′s to 1970′s like I Dream of Jeannie, I love Lucy etc still have dedicated fan followings even today.
This list of the most popular shows will try to mention as many shows as possible which were cult hits during their airing period. Some of the shows being mentioned here may still be airing even today, while some may have ended. The only thing common among these names is the fact that they were immensely popular while they were being aired.
In the comedy genre, the first name that comes to mind is of course Friends. It became popular not only in America but also in the other countries where it was aired. Similar comments can be the cartoon series “The Simpsons “, which pokes fun at the mindset of American people and politicians. Seinfeld, which basically deals with mundane everyday situations, definitely deserves to be here. Others include Everybody Loves Raymond, 30 Rock, Will and Grace etc.
The reality genre was defined by American Idol and Who Wants to be a Multimillionaire. Inspired from these, many similar series were created in various countries. The Survivor series, where a group of people had to survive in a remote tropical location too was replicated in many countries.
The X-Files was a viral hit as well and it became one of the first TV series to launch its episodes on DVD. Its simple theme music defined the mystery genre in the 1990′s. The CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) series too was an instant hit at the time of its launch.

In today’s world, reality TV shows are popping up everywhere. Over 70 reality shows have been produced to date according to a popular website. The popularity of these shows and their high ratings have attracted many people’s attention and just about every TV network in America now airs some kind of reality show.
A reality TV show has real world people instead of paid actors and actresses. These shows are supposed to portray real life situations and events that affect people’s lives. However, participants of reality TV shows are sometimes willing to go outside of their boundaries and do things that they would not necessarily do in their normal lives, without the cameras following their every move.
Some reality TV participants eat really disgusting, horrible strange things and perform potentially life threatening stunts in pursuit of monetary gain. Other participants are put in a house and expected to live in harmony with total strangers. These participants are usually under a lot of pressure when their characters clash.
Thousands upon thousands of Americans are watching reality TV shows every day. For some people, these shows help them realize that their lives are not all that bad after all. It helps them see that they are not the only ones with problems and dysfunctional lives and families.
Reality TV shows have affected society in many different ways. Some audiences get hooked on these shows because they help them escape their own real lives. The shows vary in theme and material and every show is designed to attract the biggest possible audience. The bigger the audience, the more money the shows make.
